The 1850 census for Gilmer Co, GA includes three Garren families. All were from NC; ages of the three heads of household suggest they were likely brothers.

David Garren, age 16, is shown as the second of seven children of Joseph Garren. This family does not include a female of an age to be the wife of Joseph Garren; she may have died when giving birth to the 11-mo old Martha Garren listed in census. Gilmer Co records indicate that a Joseph Garren & Tinsey Waiters (Waters?) married on Sep 22, 1850. It appears that Joseph Garren died in the mid-1850s - Tinsley Garren married John Farmer on Nov 9, 1857. The 1860 census for John & Tinsley Farmer includes James Garren, age 8; and Samuel Garren, age 6.

There were a few other Garren marriages during 1850s; however the inconsistencies of names shown in census data versus marriage records make it almost impossible to accurately match the records.

The 1860 census for Gilmer Co indicates ONLY three people with surname of Garren - the two above-mentioned children, and David Garren. David Garren is in household of Jonathan & Margaret Withrow, parents of his first wife, Sarah A. Withrow (married Jan 11, 1857) who had died on Jan 1, 1860.

David Garren returned to Gilmer County after the Civil War and married Louisa Milton. This marriage record was not found; however, Ward's book on history of Gilmer County gives the date as April 6, 1876 (the last two digits of the year are obviously transposed because in 1870 census, David & Louisa Garren have a 3-year old son!)

David & Louisa Garren are listed with following children in 1880 census:
John W. Garren, age 13
Pinkney L. Garren, age 5
"Sister" Garren, age 5 mos
Also living with them is Elizabeth Milton, age 72, b NC, mother-in-law,

At least two other children (born in 1880s) have been identified:
- Edgar David Garren, b 1883 (buried at New Hope Baptist in Gilmer Co)
- Estelle Louise Garren Key, b 1885 (also buried at New Hope Baptist in Gilmer Co)

David Garren was a merchant in Ellijay; by 1880 he was also the postmaster in Ellijay. Quoting from Ward's book, "His contemporaries gave him the reputation of being a man of great integrity and honesty of conviction."
