Gerald began his Vietnam tour on 9 January 1969 and he was assigned to the Army's 198th Light Infantry Brigade, 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, Company C.
He served his country well, but his time in Vietnam was short. On Feb 23, 1969 he was killed during a mortar attack on landing zone Gator.
