Vera Jean (McNutt) (Hickey) (Patterson) Myers was born July 24, 1923, on a farm near Freedom Oklahoma in Woodward County, Penn Township. She departed her earthly life on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2015, 11:28 a.m., at the home of her cousin/caregiver, Janice (Lile) and husband, David Meade, at 16400 S. Moonlight Rd., Olathe, KS, where she had been residing since December 2010.

In late summer of 1934, at a revival meeting, Vera Jean committed her life to the Lord Jesus Christ, trusting Him as her personal Savior, at age 11 years. On November 14, 1976, she was baptized and joined the First Baptist Church, Walsh, CO.

Vera Jean was the daughter of Siegel Albert McNutt and Lois Estell (DeVall) McNutt. They also had one younger daughter, Mildred Velma McNutt, born November 4, 1924, also same place as Vera Jean.

Her mother, Lois, died December 9, 1926, in the Woodward hospital in Woodward, Oklahoma, leaving these two little girls, Vera Jean, age 3 ½ years, and Mildred at age of 2 years. Their father Siegel and parents, Albert William and wife, Susan “Sudie” Jane (Howard) McNutt, took these little girls.

Vera Jean’s father then married Opal Ruth (Lewis) Tharp, and they had two children, Ruth Coleen McNutt, born August 20, 1931, northwest of Mooreland, Woodward County, Oklahoma on the Lewis Grove farm, and Duane Walter McNutt, born April 10, 1933, five miles northeast of Mooreland, Oklahoma, on the Hilbig farm. Opal had two girls by a former marriage: Wilburta Vondean Tharp, born April 10, 1920, and Ilene June Tharp, born June 1, 1924.

Vera Jean and Mildred attended the country grade school at West Union District #97 in Woodward County, Oklahoma; however, Vera Jean attended 8th grade in Freedom, Woods County, Oklahoma, when she went to live with her Aunt Nina (McNutt) Lile and husband, Uncle Clarence. She graduated from the Freedom High School in Freedom, Oklahoma, Thursday night, May 15, 1941, at 8:00 PM in the School Auditorium.

On June 12, 1940, Vera Jean married Clarence Leland Hickey in Alva, Woods County, Oklahoma. He was killed in a car wreck December 4, 1940, and buried in Freedom Oklahoma Cemetery.

On July 18, 1942, Vera Jean married Kenneth Marvin Patterson in Woodward, Woodward County, Oklahoma. He served in World War II, crossing Germany in the battle of the Bulge and Rhineland. His platoon was the first to meet the Russians on the Rhine River. He was discharged March 29, 1946. Then they moved to Walsh, Baca County, Colorado.

They had two children, Marvin Eugene Patterson, born December 29, 1946, in Freedom, Oklahoma, and Gary Lynn Patterson, born October 14, 1949, in Walsh, Colorado. Gary Lynn died February 28, 1950, burial in Walsh Colorado Cemetery. Marvin was drafted in the US Army and served in Vietnam and Cambodia. He was honorably discharged in 1971. Marvin died of cancer on December 8, 2009, in Louisville, Colorado, at the age of 62.

Vera Jean’s sister, Mildred was killed in a car wreck west of Barstow, California, May 5, 1951, burial in Haskew Cemetery, Woodward County, Oklahoma.

Kenneth was killed in a car wreck on September 11, 1952, burial in Walsh Colorado Cemetery.

On Sunday, September 7, 1958, Vera Jean married Vern Burton Myers of Walsh, Colorado. At that time, her son, Marvin Eugene Patterson, was 11 years old. They lived in Walsh until June 1971, when they moved to the Myers farm, north of Walsh.

Vera Jean worked for a number of years at the bank in Walsh and about 20 years at the Baca County Court House. She enjoyed living on the farm and was known for her well-cared-for gardens. Many enjoyed her bountiful harvests and delicious meals of abundant food.

Vera Jean valued her family and friends. She dearly loved her son, Marvin, and was always so proud of him. She especially enjoyed getting to spend time with her granddaughters, Cammy and Sabrina, when they were young. She loved capturing those memories with beautiful, fancy dresses and trips to the photographer.

While her husband Kenneth was in the service, she enjoyed living in various places.

The most thrilling trip she experienced was her tour of Holland, Egypt, Israel, and Greece in 1995.

God’s faithfulness and her trust in Him have helped her through the sorrows of this life. Her recent favorite Scripture that she loved Janice to read to her was, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
