Mrs. B. Norblad Dies

Mother of Ex-Governor Succumbs Here

Mrs. Betty Norblad, 81, invalid mother of ex-governor A. W. Norblad, died yesterday afternoon at 1 o’clock at her late residence at 1127 North Shaver street. She had lived in Portland for 13 years, moving here from Astoria, and had been an invalid for 40 years. Mrs. Norblad, in spite of the fact that her last years were spent in a wheel chair, spent an active youth and young womanhood. She was born at Malmo, Sweden, December 29, 1852, as Betty Anderson. She received an excellent education and in spite of an anti-feminine sentiment in business, she entered the employ of a large dairy co-operation in Sweden. At the age of 19 she had full management on the concern, which was one of the largest in Sweden. On annual trips to London, Paris and other cities on the continent, she negotiated deals for the marketing of products of her concern, earning a wide reputation as a business woman. She was married later to Peter Youngberg, an officer in the Swedish army, who later changed his name to Norblad, due to certain military customs then in effect in the country. Her first son, ex-Governor Norblad, was born in Sweden. Mrs. Norblad and her family came to the United States 55 years ago. Her husband died in Grand Rapids, Mich., 21 years ago. Mrs. Norblad is survived by her sons, A. W. Norblad, Astoria, and George F. Norblad, Portland; her daughter, Mrs. David Reger, Portland, and two grandchildren, Walter Norblad, who is now traveling abroad, and Eleanor Norblad, both in Astoria. The funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at the Holman and Lutz Colonial mortuary, and interment will be made in Rose City Park cemetery.
