Cartoonist. He is best remembered for his popular comic strip "Marmaduke" that featured a zany lovable Great Dane dog owned by the Winslow family. Born Bradley Jay Anderson, he began drawing at an early age and sold his first cartoon to Flying Aces magazine when he was 15 years old. Following his graduation from high school in 1943, he served with the US Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, he attended Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York under the GI Bill and graduated in 1951 with Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in advertising. He worked at an advertising agency for two years before he decided to focus his career as a freelance cartoonist and submitted drawings to the Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and other magazines. In 1954 he created his "Marmaduke" comic strip that became extremely popular and syndicated in around 600 newspapers at its peak. He also created the comic strip "Grandpa's Boy" that ran from 1954 until 1966. In 2010 his "Marmaduke" character was adapted in a live action comedy film by the same name that featured the voice of actor Owen Wilson as "Marmaduke." He was the recipient of the 1978 National Cartoonists Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award, Syracuse University's George Arents Award in 1999, and the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Cartoonists Society in 2013. He continued to draw "Marmaduke" until his death from congestive heart failure at the age of 91.
