Mrs. John D. Comer, age 93, of Macon, died on September 10, 2015.

She was born Mary Lewis Anderson in Macon on February 20, 1922, and was the daughter of Dr. James C. Anderson of Madison, Georgia and Annie Gantt Anderson of Macon.

Family visitation will be held on Saturday, September 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Hart’s at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road in Macon. A private graveside service will be held on Sunday, September 13 in Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev. George W. “Chip” Miller officiating.

Mrs. Comer received her A.B. degree from Wesleyan College, graduating cum laude in 1945 with a major in mathematics. Throughout her life Mrs. Comer was involved in the Macon community by dedicating her time, leadership abilities, and commitment to improving the lives of her fellow Maconites. She was Chairman of the Middle Georgia Regional Library Board for three years and President of the Friends of the Library, coordinating the yearly book sale fundraiser. Mrs. Comer served as President of the History Club of Macon, as a Board member for the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, Inc. for ten years, and gave twenty-five years of volunteer service to the American Red Cross. Mrs. Comer was a member of the first board of directors of Macon State College, where she served for ten years. She was also a board member of The Hay House and the Thomas C. Burke Foundation. In addition to her extensive civic involvement, she enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and especially looked forward to the family vacation each summer at Kanuga, near Hendersonville, North Carolina. Her greatest joy in life was her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a true matriarch in every sense of the word and she will be missed tremendously by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Mrs. Comer was preceded in death by her son John Drewry “Drew” Comer, Jr. and two sisters, Eugenia Anderson Ramsey (Bernard B.) and Annie Anderson Jones (Frank C.).
