Elizabeth Nell Burkeen, of De Leon, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 12, 2015. She was born March 5, 1932, to Jack and Arene Gooden. Nell was married to James Burkeen on July 23, 1949.

Nell worked twenty-five years at the Methodist Day Care in De Leon. She helped raise many of the kids in this area. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all who knew her. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Nell spent her life loving and taking care of everyone. She was the matriarch of our family and held us all together. The many family reunions for both sides of our family, she hosted with love. She is going to be missed by everyone who knew her loving spirit.

She loved to read, sew, cook and sit on her front porch. She made many quilts over the years which she shared with her family. These quilts will always be special and bring such fond memories of her. There have been so many memories made with her sitting on her porch just enjoying life in general. Even through it all, she never lost her faith or comforting attitude about life. She enjoyed every day and those of us who were blessed got to share in her wonderful life.

Nell is survived by her four children. She has twelve grandkids and twenty-two great grandkids. Surviving her are also her sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband of thirty-one years, James, in 1980; infant grandson, Jarod, in 1986; her parents; and one brother, Johnny Gooden.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 14, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Nowlin Anders Funeral Home with Brother Kenneth Wilson officiating. Nell will be laid to rest in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery next to her loving husband. Pallbearers are her grandsons and son-in-law.

The Burkeen family will receive friends from 3-5:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105, in memory of Nell.
