Third Officer James Patrick Cables

On March 15, 1942, the master, 34 crew members and 6 gunners of the British merchant fleet ship Manaqui were lost when the ship was sank by an enemy vessel near Barbuda. She had set sail on February 19, 1942 starting at Cardiff with a general cargo bound for Kingston, Jamaica. Her anticipated arrival date was March 20. For years, it was believed that the SS Manaqui was sunk by a German U-boat, U-504. More recently it has been suggested that an Italian submarine was the source of the attack.

Thirty-five of the lost members of the USS Manaqui are recorded on Panel 67 of the Tower Hill Memorial.

He is also commemorated on the family grave at Hither Green Cemetery.
