Son of David and Maud Mary Chaloner (nee Roberts), of Greenfield Terrace, Park Wall, Gwersyllt, Wrexham.

His birth was registered in Wrexham district, in the quarter ended March 1899
He was the 4th of their 8 children.

His parents,
David Chaloner, born 4 January 1862, died 3 March 1942, Wrexham.
Mary Roberts Chaloner, born 30 January 1867, died on 10 August 1952, Gwersyllt, Wrexham.
They were married in 1895, in Wrexham

SS Mesaba was owned by The Atlantic Transport Company Ltd. It was built in 1898 by Harland and Wolff, and launched as SS Winefreda. It was given some defensive armament during World War 1, to counter the threat of German Submarines. It was enroute from Liverpool to Philadelphia, when it was torpedoed in the Irish Channel, 21 miles East of the Tuskar Rock, by UB 118.
UB 118 was commissioned in January 1918, and sank 4 ships in her short career, including 2 on 1 September 1918, SS City of Glasgow (12 lost) and SS Mesaba (20 lost)

The nude body of an unidentified male, thought to be aged about 22, believed to be a member of the crew of SS "Mesaba", was found in the sea near ths Tusker Rock, off the coast of Co. Wexford.
The cause of death was Shock due to immersion on the sea owing to the action of an enemy Submarine.
The death was registered in Broadway district, Co. Wexford, on 9 September 1918, following an inquest held on 8 September 1918
