July 7, 1930 - September 11, 2015

Charles ‘Chuck’ A. Dickens, age 85, of 110 Spring Lake Circle, Dripping Springs, TX went to be with the Lord on Friday Sept 11, 2015.

Mr. Dickens was born July 7, 1930 in Carrizo Springs, TX. He is the son of the late Otto L. and Ethel Hicks Dickens.

“Charley” graduated from high school in Falfurrias, TX where he achieved All State honors on the football team.

He served in the Air Force in the early 50’s attaining a rank of Staff Sargent as crew chief on F86 Saber Jets. During his service “Chuck” played inter-branch football for the Hamilton AFB “Defenders” in San Francisco Bay Area which allowed him to tour Europe playing ball against rival bases. Upon honorable discharge from the AF he entered into the Aeronautical Engineering program at Northrop Institute of Technology in Inglewood, CA. earning his BS all the while providing for his growing family.

In the mid-60’s Chuck worked as a rocket engine test engineer for North American Rockwell and Rocketdyne as part of the Gemini, Mercury and Apollo Space programs that took America to the forefront of the space race and helped put a man on the moon in 1969. His crowning achievement was the safe return of Apollo 13 that was damaged enroute to the moon as part of the engineering group that spent 3 days calculating how to get the spacecraft home safely overcoming many challenges. As the space program wound down in the early 70’s Chuck took a new direction.
He became a part of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers advancing to the Chief Safety Officer of the Galveston District where he retired in the late 90’s.

The charm of the Texas Hill Country drew him and Rhoda to spend their golden years in Dripping Springs for the past 25 years. Gardening, fishing and feeding the deer.
