Mr. Spencer was born December 9, 1917 in Galveston, TX to Richard M. Spencer and Elzie Allen Spencer, the youngest of three boys (Richard, Allen, and Raymond). He grew up in Galveston, TX and Muskogee, OK.

At age 22, he was living with his parents in Lake Charles, LA and working as a salesman for Nehi bottling company. His path crossed with Carl Wallace, brother-in-law to a young woman from Gulfport, Mississippi, Audrey Engelhardt. Carl introduced Raymond to Audrey and the young couple married on June 1, 1941.

By 1943, Mr. and Mrs. Spencer had moved to Beaumont, Texas where he worked at the shipyard. It was here that the couple's first child was born.

By 1945, the family had moved back to Lake Charles, Louisiana where Mr. Spencer was working as a laborer at Cities Service Petroleum. In April, Mr. Spencer reported for duty in the Army where he was a stevedore with the 347th Troop Carrier Harbor Craft. During his time in the military, he received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon, the Army of Occupation Victory Ribbon (Japan), and the Overseas Service Bar. He was honorably discharged on August 10, 1946.

During the years that followed, three more children would arrive, and there would be time spent in Gulfport, Mississippi. Mr. Spencer would run filling stations in Sulphur, LA (Phillips 66), Lake Charles, LA (Phillips 66 and Shell), and Gulfport, MS (Conoco). Mr. Spencer also worked at the banana terminal at the Port of Gulfport, one of the largest in the United States, from approximately 1963-1969, where he was nicknamed “Key Man” and “Short Man.”

Mr. Spencer lived over half of his life in Lake Charles, Louisiana and was living there at the time of his death. He passed away at the age of 59 in a Sulphur, Louisiana hospital on July 4, 1977.

Funeral services were held on July 5, 1977 at the Hammer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Potier, associate pastor of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church officiating, assisted by Rev. D. W. Poole.

Burial was in Prien Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of the Hammer Funeral Home.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Audrey Spencer of Lake Charles, LA; three sons, Raymond Carl Spencer, Jr. and Ronald Spencer, both of Lake Charles, LA, Thomas Spencer of Grenada, MS; one daughter, Regina Spencer of Lake Charles, LA; two brothers, Allen Spencer of Philadelphia, MS and Richard Marion Spencer of Zavalla, TX; and three grandchildren.
