Retired farmer of Blendon Township. A native of England, son of John and Amelia (Dawson) Ring. The family came to Athens, Ohio, before the Civil War.

He was first married to Cora, daughter of William Brown and Zimrode Bicknell (Carter) Foster. She died in 1881 from complications of childbirth of their only child, John Brown Ring.

William was married secondly in 1894 to the widowed Abigail Miranda (Stimson) (Johnston) Williams, daughter of Dr. Stephen and Abigail (Shaw) Stimson. She preceded him in death in 1912. He was laid to rest in the family lot of his second wife.
