Helen FISCHER PATTERSON ANTHONY


Helen Patterson Anthony, 87, a longtime Abilene resident and educator, died Saturday, March 9, 2002 at a local medical center.

Mrs. Anthony was born in Blossburg, Alabama on August 29, 1914 to the late Otto Fischer and Lela Lawrence Fischer. She was a 1930 graduate of Riverside High School in Decatur, Ala., and received a B.S. Degree from Florence State Teachers College in Florence, Ala., in 1934. She received a Master of Education Degree from McMurry College (now McMurry University) in Abilene in 1955.

Helen came to Abilene in 1950 from New Orleans, LA, when her late husband, Lorenzo Dow Patterson III, was an air traffic controller with the FAA. They were married on June 11, 1938 in Decatur, Ala. He preceded her in death on December 3, 1965. She married J. Malcolm Anthony in Abilene on November 26, 1970.

Mrs. Anthony taught for 24 years in the Abilene Independent School District, first at North Park Elementary and later at Crockett Elementary School, retiring in 1974. Previously she taught five years at Gordon Bibb School in Decatur, Ala.

Mrs. Anthony was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Abilene and a member of the Homebuilders Class. She was an Emeritus Member of the Abilene Woman's Club, and a member of the Seago Circle of United Methodist Women, AARP, and local, state, and national Retired Teachers Associations. She was a former member of Sorosis Club and the Zeta Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Sponsored by the Abilene P.T.A. Associations and the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, she was honored as A.I.S.D.'s "Teacher of the Year" for upper elementary grades for the 1962-63 school year.

In addition to her parents and her first husband, Mrs. Anthony was preceded in death by a brother, Otto Fischer, Jr., and a grandson, Lorenzo Dow Patterson, V. (September, 1987.)

Survivors include her husband, Malcolm of Abilene; a son, Lorenzo Dow Patterson, IV and his wife, Jane Lancaser of San Antonio; a stepson, Jack M. Anthony, Jr. of Dallas; a stepdaughter, Jane Anthony Campbell and her husband, Larry, of Tempe, AZ; a sister, Mary Fischer Fuller of Decatur, Ala.; and two grandsons, Kit Russell Patterson and his wife, Jill of Fredericksburg, TX, a John Sky Patterson of San Antonio. She is also survived by four step- granddaughters, Laurie Campbell Lange and her husband, Brian of Phoenix, AZ, Carrie Campbell Gale and her husband, Jon of Gilbert, AZ, Ellen Anthony Moore and her husband, Christopher of New York, NY, and Jill Anthony of Austin; six great-grandchildren, Kit Russell Patterson, II, Emmalyne Marie Patterson, Nicholas Lange, Elise Claire Lange, Hillary Gale, and Grant Anthony Gale; a niece, Donna Fuller of New York, NY; and a nephew, Otto Fischer, III of Wichita, KS.

Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 15, in Elmwood Memorial Park with Rev. Darrell Patterson officiating. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Memorials may be sent to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Permanent Endowment Fund, 1741 Sayles Blvd, Abilene, TX 79605, or the Hospice of the Big County, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, TX 79605.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, 542 Hickory.
