I am just utterly saddened for this family. So much tragedy in a small amount of time
Kim was the widow of fallen police officer, Trevor Slot. She had a 5yr battle with cancer.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Friends and family of Kim Slot, 43, the widow of Walker Police Officer Trevor Slot, rallied around her after receiving the tragic news that her health was declining rapidly.

Late Tuesday night, Sept. 15, the Northview community learned the beloved teacher died in her sleep after battling cancer for five years, according to close family friend Jeff Lambert.

"It's a tough situation all around," Lambert said on Wednesday.

Trevor Slot was killed in the line of duty on Oct. 13, 2011, as he prepared to lay stop sticks on the freeway to stop two fleeing bank robbers.

Kim Slot told The Press in November 2011 she had been on the phone with her husband to give him the news her cancer had returned and spread to her spine immediately before he was hit and killed.

Lambert, who graduated Northview High School with Trevor Slot in the late '80s and remained friends with him until his death, has lived across the street from the Slots for about seven years.

He saw Kim Slot last week and said she was in good spirits and struggling at the same time.

"She was ready to go see Trevor," Lambert said.

Kim Slot was a beloved teacher at Crossroads Middle School in Northview's tight-knit community. Principal Dan Duba spoke to the school's staff about the tragic news early Wednesday morning, Superintendent Scott Korpak said.

Korpak emailed families within the district this morning about the tragic news, and issued the following statement on the district's website this morning:

"The Northview community is deeply saddened by the death of Crossroads' teacher Kim Slot on September 16. The Northview community will miss her more than simple words can express. She was not just our co-worker but our good friend, our neighbor and a loving Northview parent. Memories of her warmth, her spirit, her faith, her strength, her kindness and her humility will be cherished by all who knew her. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends."

She was not only an extraordinary role model for students and staff, but also for her family, friends and the couple's two daughters, Abby and Katelyn Slot.

"Her roles best described her," Lambert said of Kim.

As a teacher, Kim loved her students, but was "strong" and held them accountable, he said. As a friend, she was fun to be around and enjoying the company of her friends and family and those of her late husband.

"She was a great mother who put others first," said Lambert, who spoke on behalf of the Slot's close-knit circle of friends. He noted that he will miss her kind-hearted spirit and tenacity and how she attacked cancer with an "attitude."

"She never complained. She focused on life and living and being there for her daughters," he said. "I'll miss her as a role model. I'll certainly miss her fun-loving spirit. Truly, in every sense of the word, she was a role model."

Katelyn Slot, a sixth grader at Highlands Middle School, and Abby, a fourth grader at East Oakview Elementary School, are surrounded by love and support from nearby family and neighborhood friends.

"I don't expect that to stop," Lambert said.

Northview schools is establishing a Kim Slot Memorial Fund. Donations can be sent to the district office in care of the Kim Slot Memorial Fund, 4365 Hunsberger NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525.
