Elfner, Robert W.

Robert W. Elfner, age 87 of Manitowoc, died on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at his residence.

Robert was born on June 30, 1927 in Manitowoc, son of Edward and Julia (Bellin) Elfner. He attended St. Andrews Catholic School and graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1945. Robert earned an engineering mechanics degree while being employed for 45 years with Weyerhaeuser Corporation. He retired as Project Engineer in 1992. After retirement he started his own company, Bob Elfner Technical Advisor for the paper industry. He was very active in the printing and bar coding also teaching and doing seminars at University of Wisconsin and Fox Valley Technical College. During his working career he traveled many countries throughout the world.

On May 15, 1950 he married the former Alice Rothmeyer in Calmar, Iowa. Robert then married Phyllis Hoefner Herzog on July 15, 1996 in Manitowoc.

Robert was a member of many organizations including the Fiber Box Association, the Technical Association for the Pulp Paper Industry, the American Society of Mechanical/Engineer, a past member of the Eagles Club #706, the Elks Club #768 served as Exalted Ruler, life member of the Manitowoc Yacht Club and served on the Board of Directors and was chairman of the finance committee for many years, Director of Harper Love Company, past Chairman of Triad, past member of the Board of Directors for Elderly Care and Hospice, past President of the Manitowoc Golden K, and past Lt. Governor of Wisconsin U.M. District of Kiwanis, and he served on the Mayors Advisory Counsel. He also enjoyed playing a number of sports including: golf, softball, swimming, fishing and YMCA racquetball. Robert was also a member of St. Francis of Assisi in Manitowoc.

Survivors include his wife: Phyllis Elfner, Manitowoc; four daughters and two sons-in-law: Kathleen Blair, Pittsburgh, PA, Roberta and Sam Batten, Tallasse, AL, Rebecca Bruss, Manitowoc, Mary Elfner and Geof Wilson, Richmond, VA; seven grandchildren: Sean, Robert, John, Erin, Samantha, Kristin and Elijah; 10 great grandchildren: Hannah, Rachel, Ivy, Riley, Michael, Kyle, Tyler, Alice, Bryan and Sophie; the mother of his children: Alice Elfner, AL; five step children: Michael (Amy) Herzog, Todd (Karen) Herzog, Steve (Mary) Herzog, Patti (Chuck) Komorosky and Rebecca Genske; seven step grandchildren: Melissa, Jessica, Kevin, Allison and Kyle Herzog, Kayla Komorosky and Jacob Genske; and one step great grandchild: Anias Genske. He is further survived by two sisters-in-law: Susan Harkness, Columbus, GA, and Bea Buss, Manitowoc; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Merlie and Betty Hoefner, Manitowoc. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by one son-in-law: James Bruss, four brothers and two sisters-in-law: George and Evie Elfner, Ervin and Dorothy Elfner, Edward Elfner, Lloyd Elfner, one sister and brother-in-law: Kathryn and John Kalusky; one step son-in-law: Jeff Genske; and one brother-in-law: Don Buss.

Cremation has taken place at All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc and a Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2015 at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo (1121 North 14th Street), Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Dave Pleier and burial of Robert's cremated remains will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc, at a later date.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, June 15, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo.

Pfeffer Funeral Home and All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
