The first record of my grandfather, James William Wallace, is in the 1870 US Federal Census, page 15 of 22, lines 11-17. James W. is 1 year old. He is the son of William E., age 40, and Levina (maiden name unknown, maybe Knox), age 37. He had 1 brother, William E., age 7, and 2 sisters, Ella (Ellen) M., age 10, and Matilda M. Wallace, age 5. Their last name is spelled Wallice in this Census. The family lives in the Turnersburg Township, Iredell, NC. The Post Office is in County Line, NC. His father, William is a farmer, their Real Estate Value was $230.00. I think Iredell is the birthplace of James W. His grandmother Keziah, age 80 is living with her son, William and family. This is the last time and place we find Keziah, except her and her husband's name on William's Certificate of Marriage to his 2nd wife, Sarah Tucker. William's parents are listed as J. E. Wallis and K. Wallis. It also states that both are dead.

1880
In the 1880 US Federal Census, page 11 of 28, line 46, we find James W., age 10, living in the Bryne Township No. 4, Surry County, NC. He is living with David Stokes, age 19, David's two sisters, and a nephew and his mother, Louisa M. Stokes, age 58. James W. is listed as a Servant, as a Farm Laborer. Also, his sister Matilda, age 12, was living with another neighboring Stokes family, Lou M. Stokes, age 33, and her 2 young children. Matilda is listed as a Servant. These Stokes families could be their Aunt Mary Matilda Wallace Stokes' husband's family, James and Matilda's paternal grandfather, William E. Wallace's, sister was married to Henry Stokes.

In the 1880 US Federal Census, page 7 of 11, line 11, in the Cherry Lane Township, Alleghany County, NC., we find his older sister, Ella M. Wallace, age 20, living in the home of Aaron Woodruff, age 63, and his wife, Pheriba, age 54. She is listed as a Servant.

Also, in the 1880 US Federal Census, page 2 of 40, lines 49 and 50, we find their father, William E. and 16 year old son William E. Wallace (name spelled Wallis). They are living and working in Pilot Township, Surry County, NC. William Sr., is working in a Saw Mill, William Jr. is working as a Farm Laborer. It is "marked" that William Sr. is married and his son is single. They must been having a very hard time to have their family scattered in many places. Thus far, I have not been able to find where their mother was during this time. I will keep searching. She is not in the picture again. William fathered a son in 1883, R. Henry, which I think was Levina's, she may have died in childbirth or shortly after. This would give her death to be in around 1883. William marries again in 1885. R. Henry is listed as William and his second wife Sarah Tucker Wallace's child.

After the death of his mother, Levina, his dad, age 50 (one of the census states, the birth date would make him 55), marries Sarah Tucker, age 20, on Sep 13, 1885. They have 5 children, 3 sons and 2 daughters, R. Henry (who was born in 1883), Franklin Garfield and Sidney Harrison Wallace; 2 daughters, Cora Lee and Lucy Jane Wallace.

1890
NO UNITED STATES FEDERAL CENSUS, due to a tragic fire in Washington, D.C., that destroyed most of the records, so it would seem as history skips 10 years. I am not sure if James W. and his brptjer William E. returns home to his father and stepmother.

1900
The next place I find James W. is in THE 1900 US FEDERAL CENSUS, page 38 of 49, line 53, and his brother William, line 55. Line 54 was a Boarder that lived with them. They are living and working in Elkhorn Magisterial District, McDowell County, WV. It is interesting that he and his brother "moves" the year of their birth back "6 years". The Census says James age 24, and William, age 28. Acording to the 1870 Census James was age 1, and William was age 7. So, their ages should be, James, age 30, and William, age 36. Their occupations says Laborers, almost all of the men in this area were working at the Coal Mines or something to do with the mines. They rented their home.

1908
In 1908, he is still living at Kyle, McDowell County, WV. He marries 20 year old Nancy Elizabeth Dolinger on May 19, 1908 at Welch, McDowell County, WV .

1910
We find them living in Kyle, Elkhorn District, McDowell County, WV. in the 1910 US Federal Census, James and wife Elizabeth and their 2 year old son, William Delmar and James' brother William is living with them. They are renting their home. Both men were Coal Miners.

1916
The next time we hear about James and family is when Elizabeth receives a post card from Laura Hampton who wrote and sent a picture postcard of her and her fellow, which was Elizabeth's brother Thomas "Tom" Franklin Dolinger. Tom was living at Pagetown, McDowell County, WV. Tom and Laura were married on Dec 22, 1916.

James and Elizabeth are still living in Kyle, WV. They now have 5 children. William Delmer, born on Dec 26, 1907; Thomas Franklin, Aug 8, 1910; Bertha Mae, June 30, 1913; Walter Lee, Feb 23, 1915; and James Wesley, Sep 14, 1916. James' brother Will, is still living and working in the Coal Mine in McDowell County, WV.

1917
We find their brother, Sidney "Sid" Harrison and wife Essie Marion Wallace also living in McDowell County, WV. I find this record in his WORLD WAR I DRAFT REGISTRATION. He was working for JOHN RAY CONTRACTOR, Kyle, McDowell County, WV. Their first child, a daughter, Gladys Martha, was born on Mar 15, 1918 at Switchback, Elkhorn District, McDowell County, WV.

1918
Jessie Marvin was born on April 20, 1918. He was the baby. He died of Croup/Pneumonia on Nov 24, 1922.

From 1908 to 1918, James and Elizabeth, have 6 children, William Delmar, Thomas Franklin, Bertha Mae, Walter Lee, James Wesley (my dad) and Baby Jessie Marvin.

1920
In the 1920 US Federal Census, we find my grandmother, Elizabeth age 29, is a widow. She has moved back to Wilson District, Park Road, Grayson County, Va. This is close to where she was born. She is renting a home next to her father, Wesley, age 54, stepmother, Alice, age 47, and her younger siblings, her brother, Robert Fred, age 17, sisters, Larma Ethel, age, 13, and Ennis Luada , age, 9. Elizabeth, a young widow, her children were from 1 year old to 11 years old. She never remarried. As I put my grandfather James W. Wallace's bio in numerical order of years, they were still in Kyle, WV., according to Marvin's dead certificate tells us that Marvin was born in McDowell County in 1918. I think James W. Wallace died in 1918 or 1919 at Kyle, WV. My grandmother told my mother that she and her husband was sitting on the bed (not many people had sofas back then), "stringing beans" and he felt backwards. He was dead. Maybe a Heart Attack. My Aunt Bertha's (she had died) husband told his children that her father died from the Flu. I think they were both right. That is when the deadly Spanish Flu hit so hard, thousands of people died from it. In many places, so many died that had to be buried quickly that their records are no records, extremely hard to find or "lost" due to mass graves.

I will update as I find more information. If anyone has more information concerning our family, I'd love to hear from you.
