Obituary

MaryJo was the seventh of nine children born to Arizona pioneers, James Thomas & Ura Bea Taylor Aiton. She was born in Clifton, Arizona on June 5, 1922 and graduated from this earthly life and went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 17, 2014.

MaryJo is survived by her children: Kathie McMahon, Norman (Betsy) McMahon, Jim (Nancy) McMahon, Dan (Bambi) McMahon, Merileene (Paul) Hiatt, and Jonathan (Robin) McMahon; step-children Dave (Kathy) Stockdale, Diane (Vic) Wagoner, Darlene (Kent) Vogt and Debra (Brian) Mead; 32 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

MaryJo was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, two brothers, her 1st husband H. Ambrose McMahon, her 2nd husband Eugene R. Stockdale, her oldest son Amby K. McMahon and grandsons Nic McMahon, Jeremiah and Noah Buller and Brian Mead.
MaryJo was born into God's family in February 1930, and dedicated her life to serve her Lord when she was 15 years of age. One year after graduating from the Phoenix Union High School in 1939, she went to the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, located at that time in downtown Los Angeles. There she met her husband-to-be, H. Ambrose McMahon, and they were married in Cuernavaca, Mexico on September 29, 1943. In October of that same year they went to live among the Cora Indians on the west coast of Mexico, where they worked under Wycliffe Bible Translators to translate the New Testament into the language of the Coras. Since they were nine hours by mule-back from the nearest doctor, MaryJo began to serve both the Mexicans and the Coras in medical work. They spent 23 years in this work, along with other duties assigned to them, both in the U.S. and in Mexico City.

In 1969 after Ambrose had been teaching at Biola University for three years, he was suddenly called home to be with his Lord. MaryJo moved to Phoenix to be with her family. Eleven years later, having moved to California to work again for Wycliffe Bible translators she met a former medical missionary to Africa whose wife had gone to be with the Lord a year and a half earlier. Eugene Stockdale and MaryJo were married January 18, 1981 and had 31 wonderful years together serving the Lord both in churches in the U.S. and overseas in Africa. Because of a need they discovered in Africa, they founded HEARTS for the Deaf organization to provide funding for the students at the Deaf school at Mbingo Hospital in N.W. Cameroon. After retirement they moved first to Washington State, where they lived for 12years, then to Phoenix in January 2004, where they lived until they said the final Goodbye to one another and the family that was so dear to both of them.

The following list of books MaryJo wrote and published; Chain of Love, Cell of Silence, Rock of Bethlehem and Wilderness Wells.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hearts of the Deaf, through Palmcroft Baptist Church, 15825 N 35th Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85053. A Memorial service celebrating MaryJo's life will be held at 2:00 pm on July 13th, 2014 at Palmcroft Baptist Church.
