A native San Franciscan, passed away peacefully at home in Palo Alto with her family at her bedside on July 14, 2007. Born in March of 1921 to James and Mary Frances Coyle, Mary was the eldest of six children.
A graduate of Notre Dame High School, Mary went on to earn her BA from San Francisco State University in 1942. Following graduation, she taught grammar school in Lakeport and San Francisco before taking a job in the Communications Department of Pan American World Airways. At Pan Am, Mary met her future husband, John Woodside, a flight radio officer, and they married in 1946. After several years in San Francisco, the couple moved to the Peninsula where they raised three children. John and Mary recently celebrated 61 happy years together.
Mary is survived by her husband, daughters Dianne (Ed) Clark of Redwood City and Christine Bordeleau of San Mateo, and son Jack (Joni) Woodside of Atherton, six grandchildren: Christine (Paul) Vellani from Ohio, Marie Bordeleau of San Jose, Jay Bordeleau of San Francisco, Jason Clark of Windsor, Jeremy Clark of Belmont, and Kelley Clark of Redwood City, a brother, Robert (Mary Lou) Coyle of Novato, a sister-in-law, Diane Coyle of Santa Rosa, a brother-in-law Alfred (Dolores) Hons of San Carlos and many nieces and nephews.
A vigil will be held at Roller, Hapgood & Tinney at 980 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto on Thursday, July 19, at 6 p.m. with a rosary service at 7 p.m. Friends and family are invited to join a celebration of Mary's life at a Memorial Mass to be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 20, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 751 Waverley St, Palo Alto.
The family requests memorial donations be sent to Pathways Hospice Foundation, 585 North Mary Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94085.
