Alton Krapu, age 81, of Lisbon died September 20th, 2015 in Fargo in palliative care.
Alton Newman Krapu, eldest child of Seth Evalt Krapu and Marguerite Lucille Newman, was born in Monango, ND on May 24th, 1934. He grew up in a number of small towns in ND including Oakes, Forman, and Steele. In 1952 he graduated high school in Fessenden. After completing coursework in linotype at NDSCS in Wahpeton, he took a job as a printer's assistant in Fessenden before joining the army.
From 1954 to 1956 Alton served in the US Army at Fort Knox, KY after training as a medical specialist at Fort Sam Houston, TX. On November 24, 1954 he married Berdena Johnson in her hometown of Watford City, ND, and they lived in Fort Knox, Watford City, Ray and Williston for the first several years. He ran his own service station in Ray. Alton and Berdena had three daughters; Gayle, Benita, and DeAnn. In the 1960s the family lived in Billings, MT and in the 1970s they lived in the Grand Forks, ND area. When they moved to Montana, Alton returned to printing work at the local newspaper and continued with the Grand Forks Herald when they moved to Grand Forks. He returned to school for an accounting degree and became a bookkeeper for a local appliance store. In his later years was a crew driver for the BNSF railroad.
He married Joanne Olson (née Hunter) in 1983. They lived in Minot and Drake, ND for most of their time together. In December of 2013 Alton moved to the North Dakota Veteran's Home in Lisbon.
Surviving are his former wife Berdena Krapu of Castle Rock, CO; three daughters - Gayle (Brian) Tingley of Saskatoon, SK, Canada, Benita (Scott) Straight of Monument, CO, and DeAnn (Michael) Payne of Lakewood, CO; stepdaughter Lavonne (Jeromy) Henderson and stepson Laverne Hill, both of Minot; grandchildren Jessica (Glen) Campbell and Jennifer (Stephen) Campbell, both of Edmonton, AB, Canada, Adam (Sarah) Straight, Cheyenne, WY, Aaron (Erica) Straight, Jacksonville, NC; seven great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren Whittni Hanson, Dylon Heizlman, Kohlton Ness, Wiatt Ness, Shalynn Hill, all of Minot; siblings Mavis Krapu, Joan Justesen, Fargo, Jon (Adeline) Krapu, Harvey, ND and Cheryl Waters, Minot; nieces and nephews Chad (Shawn Christianson) Justesen, Fargo, Jerad (Kacey) Justesen, Plymouth, MN, Lisa (Greg) Browning, Pasco, WA, Katie (Sam) Crowell, Minot, and Lacy (Earl) Paul, Burlington.
