William was the seventh of eight children born to Howard Gould Northrop and Mary DeSaussure Richey Northrop. He was raised initially at Chicago, Illinois where his father was a transit company manager. Some time between 1901 and 1910, the family relocated to East Hampton, New York where his father was a home farm operator. William relocated to Baltimore, Maryland about 1917 where he was an inspector for Bartlett Hayward Company. About 1920, he relocated to Manhattan, New York where he was engaged as a banking clerk. William graduated from New York University School of Law and opened his own law office. William married to Beverly Denneau on 6 February 1936 at Manhattan. By 1942, he was a lawyer with the City of New York Court of Special Sessions. William and Beverly had no children.
