An associate professor of agriculture economics at Purdue, he was widely known for his economic forecasts and was in charge of The Outlook--forecasts made each autumn and carried to Hoosier farmers in a series of some 60 meetings. He also was widely known throughout the Midwest as a specialist and researcher in management of swine enterprises.
Prof. Bauman's service extended to foreign countries, when in 1950-51 he was food and agriculture officer for the Marshall Plan in Ireland and traveled extensively in western Europe. Earlier, he was with the Farm Credit Administration in Washington, DC, as a financial and organization specialist.
After receiving his master's degree, he joined the Lafayette Joint Stock Land Bank ad a farm management specialist. He served with the Aetna Life Insurance Co. from 1929 to 1934 as a farm loan supervisor for the state of Ohio.
Prof. Bauman was a visiting professor at Northwestern University for the 1953 summer session and at the University of California at Berkeley, August 1963 to February 1963.
He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church and Agathon and Alpha Zeta fraternities. He was a member of the American Farm Economic Association, the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, the Indiana Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, and the International Association of Agriculture Economists. He was the author and co-author of numerous technical and popular publications.
Surviving with his widow are a daughter, Elizabeth (Mrs. Leslie) Graham of Chicago; three sons, Ronald H. Bauman, Jr. of Chicago, Dr. Richard Lee Bauman with the Armed Forces in Europe, and Thomas Trost Bauman, a graduate student at Purdue; a brother, Byron Bauman of South Whitley; and seven grandchildren.
