Patrick was born on April 16, 1928 in Two Rivers, son of the late Frank and Marie (Monroe) Gonia. He attended schools at St. Luke and was a graduate of Washington High School. On April 23, 1949 he married the former Betty Keip at St. Luke Catholic Church (St. Peter the Fisherman) where they have been life-long members. He was enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Corpsman and served his country with pride. Pat and Betty were the owners of Gonia’s Bar where they worked side by side for many years, and were well known for their Betty Burgers. Pat was a member of the Kiwanis Club, St. Joe’s Club and the February Club. Over the years Pat donated blood willingly to help others in need. When not working, Pat found enjoyment in hunting and playing golf. However, his true passion was spending time with his wife, Betty, of 63 years and his family.
Survivors include the love of his life, his wife: Betty Gonia; his children: Louise (Fred) Schmoock, Mary (Tom) Owens, Sue DeKok and special friend Gene LeClair, Rick Gonia and fiancée Sagina Brown; nine grandchildren: Anne (Todd), Kimberly (Kevin), Joshua, Jennifer (Al), TJ (Kerri), Kari (Tom), Edward (Jessica), Emily (Jake) and Luke; eleven great-grandchildren: Amanda, Stephanie, Mackenzie, Katie, Kylie, Angela, Casey, Madelyne, Myles, Mason and Brody; one sister: Phyllis Bloch; one sister-in-law: Dolores Keip. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was also preceded in death by one brother: Roland Gonia; one sister: MaryAnn LaBudda and two brothers-in-law: Edward Keip and Edward Bloch.
Cremation has taken place at All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, and a Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at St. Peter the Fisherman, Two Rivers. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Tom Reynebeau.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, December 6, 2012, at St. Peter the Fisherman, Two Rivers, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Rivers Bend for the care they showed our Dad during his time there. A very special thanks to the staff at Home Care Health Services and Lakeland Care District. In particular Bonnie Tonkin (you were our Angel, we are overwhelmed with gratitude).
You will be in our hearts everyday. Dad was always a gentleman. His wife and family always came first. We will miss his intelligence and quick wit. Dad was an avid Cubs fan his entire life… but it’s okay Dad, we never held it against you. We love you Dad! Until we meet again…
