Attorney general of Tennessee 1836-1842; member of the State house of representatives in 1843 and 1844; served in the State senate in 1845 and 1846, and in 1859 and 1861, when, as a Southern Unionist, he resigned because of the secession of the State; United States attorney from April 1862 until August 1864; served in the State senate from 1865 to 1867; elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress (March 4, 1867-March 3, 1869).
