In September 2012, aviation archaeologist, Uwe Benkel, and his team of veteran German researchers unearthed the wreckage and human remains of 49 Squadron's Avro Lancaster III (#ED427) aircraft which had crashed and exploded on 17 April 1943 while on an RAF war operation. In 2015 the remains of all seven of the Lancaster's aircrew were officially identified, their surviving family members were informed and, on 21 Oct 2015 a military funeral in their honour was held. The seven aircrew mates were laid to rest--with full military honours—in Germany's Durnbach War Cemetery.

49 Squadron's Avro Lancaster III (#ED427) aircraft took off from RAF Fiskerton, with an aircrew of seven, participating in an air operation over Czechoslovakia's Škoda armaments works. The aircraft crashed in Germany, having presumably been hit by enemy flak, taking the lives of the entire crew—for almost 70 years the site of the crash remained unknown, the seven airmen commemorated at the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey, England.

The seven airmen who perished when ED427 crashed were-

RAFVR Flying Officer Alexander Victor BONE,

RAFVR Sergeant Ronald COPE,

RAFVR Sergeant Raymond Norman Percy FOSTER,

RAFVR Sergeant Raymond Joseph ROONEY,

RCAF Pilot Officer Bruce Emmott WATT,

RAFVR Sergeant Raymond Charles WHITE and

RAFVR Sergeant Cyril William YELLAND.

Rank: Sergeant

Service Number 1578189
