Casualty of WWII, Pilot Officer David was one of three sons of the late Captain Frank Sowter Barnwell,(killed 1938 whilst flight testing) and of Marjorie Barnwell, of Stoke Bishop, Bristol, who gave their lives whilst on war service with the Royal Air Force/ Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. His Service No. was 61052. He is remembered on the wargrave of one of his brothers, Pilot Officer (Pilot) John Sandes Barnwell at Scopwick Church Burial Ground in Lincolnshire. John died June 19th 1940 (Awarded the King's Medal, R.A.F. College, Cranwell, 1939), aged 20, whilst serving with 29 Sqdn. His other brother Flt. Lieut. Richard Antony Barnwell was lost on operations on October 29th 1940 aged 24.He has no known grave and is also commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial
