Alvis Hunt, 86, of Jackson and former banking executive with Trustmark National Bank, passed away Friday, December 25, 2009 at a local nursing home of complications from Alzheimer's.
As a young boy growing up in the 1930s in McCool, MS, he learned that helping your neighbor was something that was your obligation. He followed this discipline throughout his entire life - in his community, his business, his church and his family. During his banking career, his greatest reward was derived from this philosophy by helping thousands of people in their business and personal financial needs.
Mr. Hunt began his career as a messenger in 1941 at Jackson-State National Bank (predecessor bank of Trustmark). Over the years he advanced within the bank, assuming positions of greater responsibility, and became President in 1976 and Vice Chairman in 1992. He served on the Board of Trustmark Corporation and Trustmark National Bank, and after his retirement was named Vice Chairman Emeritus in 1994.
Mr. Hunt was a past chairman of the Mississippi Economic Council. He also had served on the Board of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, Mississippi Valley Gas, UAD Laboratories, MS Diversified Corporation, Life Insurance Company of Mississippi, and the Pearl River Valley Water District.
While dedicated to serving his community, Mr. Hunt served in various capacities within numerous organizations, including the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, Andrew Jackson Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Junior Achievement of Mississippi, Jackson Industrial Development Corporation, Central Mississippi Growth Foundation, Metro Chamber of Commerce, Jackson Municipal Airport Authority, United Way, and Hinds County Cancer Society.
Additionally, Mr. Hunt devoted much time and energy to increasing the quality of education in the state. He served on the Board of the Mississippi Higher Education Assistance Corporation, was a member of the Education Services Foundation, and was a past President of the Mississippi State University Development Foundation. He was also a past member of the Board of the Jackson State University Development Foundation, and of the Board of Trustees of Piney Woods Country Life School.
Mr. Hunt received many honors during his distinguished career. Among those were being named to the Mississippi Business Hall of Fame in 1993 and Humanitarian of the Year in 1994 by the Epilepsy Foundation.
Mr. Hunt was an active member and lifetime deacon of First Baptist Church of Jackson.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary; his son Truman; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel, Highland Colony Parkway, Ridgeland,MS.
