Born to Finnish immigrants Maria Sophia [Sunnarborg] Thompson and Matt [Kantola] Thompson in Ironwood MI, William was their eldest child. He was given the name "Mat" at birth. Finns typically use their middle name as their primary name, and the first son and daughter are usually named after the parents'.

William left the family farm in Marengo WI to travel east and see the world. He married Florence Catherine Stahl 1919-1921 in (probably) NY or PA. They had two children, Clyde Matthew and William. They divorced sometime between 1930-1940. Florence retained custody of the children and remarried Arnold Carl Carocci.

William was incarcerated in the Philadelphia House of Corrections at the time of his death. He'd been admitted to Philadelphia General Hospital for surgery in August 1954 and died 15 days later from a cerebral infarction (stroke). He married a 2nd time in Oct 1951 to Patricia Weber and they had one child together; Michael Thompson. The child's DOB is unknown.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Julia [Thompson] Moe.

William is survived by 10 brothers and sisters; his ex-wife Florence Carocci; current wife Patricia and sons William Jr., Clyde Matthew and Michael Thompson.
