Son of Jesse Martin and Samaria (Duke) Cagle. He grew up in Cullman County AL where he learned music from Seaborn McDaniel Denson, a noted Sacred Harp singer and composer. He was also employed on a farm owned by Seaborn's brother, Thomas Jackson Denson, who was allso a noted Sacred Harp singer and composer, and he took interest in his first musical compositions. He married Margaret "Maggie" Denson (date unknown), the daughter of Thomas Jackson and Amanda (Burdette) Denson, but the marriage ultimately ended in divorce. There were three children born to this union. He then married Lena Rose Drake who died around 1959 and subsequently married Inez Lee (dates of these marriages unknown). He worked at a bank, as a traveling salesman, and a bookkeeper, before he retired to Villa Rica GA. He was actively involved in the singing and writing of Sacred Harp music and his compositions can be found in the 1936 Denson Revision of the Original Sacred Harp. He was chairman of the music committee for the 1960 Sacred Harp Revision and music committee member for the 1966 Sacred Harp Revision.
