Son of Col. Giles Chittenden and Mary Hawley.

Giles Chittenden and his family became destitute after securing a loan for a relative whose business eventually failed. After Giles' death, the article states creditors of the estate were so impressed by the family's determination to repay the debt that they agreed to work with the family to ensure they did not lose the family's land.

Eli married Charlotte Sinclair, built a log house between Jericho and Williston, and lead the effort to repay the debt. Eli did repay the creditors, but the work left him in such poor health that he eventually left the family farm to live in Williston. There he became the proprietor of the Eagle Hotel, a popular stop on the stage road between Burlington and Montpelier. In 1831, the Vermont State Legislature granted him the exclusive right to operate a ferry across the Onion River (now called the Winooski River) from his property for 10 years. He partnered with Horace Nichols to create a shipping company to move products from Vermont to various markets, and return with finished goods. Railroads eventually replaced shipping via water, and Eli and Charlotte moved to Chicago to work in real estate. After Charlotte's death, Eli retired and returned to Vermont. He married Marian W. on October 31 1867 in Plattsburgh, New York.

"Mr. Chittenden's cheerful, kind and genial disposition made his intercourse with every one pleasant and agreeable. He was generous and liberal and many a relative and friend owe their success in life in a great measure to the material aid and sound advice received from him. ... He was 86 years old on the 26th of January last. During that period of nearly a century, what great changes have taken place in the county which bears his name! Of the hundreds of descendants of Governor Thomas Chittenden, very few now reside either in this county or in Vermont, and Eli Chitenden was the last male descendant of Gov. Thomas Chittenden in this county, who bore his name."" (Burlington Weekly Free Press, March 30, 1883).
