Martin was assigned to and served with Company I, 3d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During January and into February, the Battalion continued to conduct assigned combat operations in the Da Nang vital area of Quang Nam Province.

Military sources reported that on February 3, PFC Martin Burns took his own life for reasons only known to himself.

Deceased Name: Marine Pfc. Martin J. Burns
Marine Pfc. Martin J. Burns, 18, of 1007 S. 8th Av., La Grange, was killed Tuesday while serving with the 1st Marine Division in Quang Nam province, Viet Nam, the Defense Department announced yesterday.

His mother, Caroline, said she was notified of the death Wednesday, but that the circumstances surrounding her son's death were not disclosed to her. Also surviving are a sister, Carol, 23, and a brother, Pfc. William H. Burns Jr., 25, now in the Army.

Martin graduated from Kennedy High School in 1969, and attended Western Illinois University, Macomb, until he enlisted in the Marines last July 1. He was sent Overseas Dec. 23
