He was born February 20, 1941, unto the union of the late Elmer, SR & Hettie Lockhart Austin in Independence, VA. Dr. Austin was a life long educator who loved learning, his students, and his colleagues. He held a doctorate and law degree & served as a teacher, principal, superintendent, and professor throughout his accomplished career.
Jerry was the longtime superintendent of Mecklenburg County, Virginia and Harlan Independent Schools, Kentucky before retiring as a college professor from Eastern Kentucky University. Dr. Austin was a wonderful steward of the lamp of knowledge.
He is preceded in death by sisters: Elly & Doris Austin and brother, Elmer Gene Austin, JR.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra French of Dayhoit, KY, sons, Barry Austin of Port Deposit, MD, Richard Austin of Brentwood, TN, Stacey Austin of Crozier, VA, step-son, Christopher French of Dayhoit, KY, step-daughters, Shana Brock of Danville, KY and Cristy Minshew of Chesapeake, VA, brother, Jim Austin of Galax, VA and ten grandchildren.
