LEWES - Joseph Henry Louis Burton, 82, beloved as 'Pop' and 'Uncle Joe,' departed this life on June 12, 2010, at Harbor HealthCare, Lewes.

Joseph was born on Sept. 14, 1927, in Lewes, to the union of Albert Louis Burton and Nathlie Lucinda Pauline Maull. Losing Nathlie early in their marriage, Albert wed Reba Dunn and moved the family to Dover where Joseph attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School. Graduating from the former Delaware State High School, Joseph attended Delaware State College. He later entered the military and was stationed at Fairfield-Suisun Army Base, California. Joseph trained as an electrician, serviced the air craft. He was later stationed at Scott Field, Ill., attending the Telephone & Telegraph Lineman's School. Joseph received an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1948.

Joseph returned to Delaware working for many years as a waiter for restaurants and private parties in Dover and the Lewes-Rehoboth area. He was employed for a number of years at Doxsee Clam (Factory) Corporation, moving on in 1960 to 325 Cecil Street, Dover, where he began a labor of love for General Foods (Kraft). Joseph retired in 1986 faithfully providing for the care and comfort of his wife who died in 2007 after many years of illness.

Throughout his life, Joseph was generous in spirit pouring into the lives of his family and friends providing many precious memories to cherish in the years to come. He was an avid reader, collecting many interesting books, and he was an excellent cook. Joseph devoted much of his time to family, work and church. He proved himself a faithful and dependable member of Second Baptist Church, Dover. Prior to his advancing health care needs, Joseph attended Sunday school and services at Frontline Ministries, Dover, where he was adopted with much love by the church family as Uncle Joe.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta G. Burton; brother, Waymon Hammond; sisters, Delores Burton Barrett, and Elaine Burton Mosley; and brother-in-law, Granville B. Barrett Sr.

He leaves to celebrate his life, sister, Marcella Kenner of Lewes; brother-in-law, Coleman W. Mosley Sr. of Dover; his wife's children. Charles Joyner Jr., Olivia Joyner, Esther Marshall, and Rita Joyner, all of Philadelphia; grandson, Charles Joyner of Dover; nieces, Wanda E. Taylor of Seaford, Cynthia D.B. Farlow (Sam) of Lewes, Paula K. B. Johnson (James) of Smyrna, Deborah L. Fisher of Dover, Rochelle L. Bell (Anthony) of Clinton, Md., and Sharon E. Mosley of Long Island, N.Y.; nephews, Michael W. Mosley of Philadelphia, Ronald A. Barrett (Malinda) of Louisville, Ky., Reginald B. Mosley (Judy) of Tampa, Fla., Bruce E. Barrett of St. Louis, Mo., Coleman W. Mosley Jr. of Wilmington, and Granville B. Barrett Jr. of Georgetown; and a host of other relatives, friends, and acquaintances.

Arrangements and professional care entrusted to Miller Funeral Services. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 19, at St. George AME Church, 317 Park Ave., Lewes, with funeral services following at noon. Interment will be in People's Memorial Park.
