John L. Garrigan, 95, of 309 S. Market St., passed away Saturday, May 28, 2016, at home surrounded by his family.
He was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Shamokin, a son of the late Harry and Elizabeth (Mullen) Garrigan.
He was a graduate of St. Edward's Catholic High School.
John was a veteran of World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps enlisting July 25, 1942. He received an honorable discharge Nov. 6, 1945, after serving with the 1664 Ordnance S and M in the Rhineland and Central Europe. Cpl. Garrigan received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal and European-African-Middle East Service Medal with two bronze stars.
On April 24, 1946, in St. Stephen's Church, Coal Township, by the Rev. Cassin Zembrznski, he married Josephine A. Dindor who preceded him in death April 22, 2013.
John spent his career working for the Reading Railroad.
He is survived by his five children, Ann Polvinale, of Greenbelt, Maryland, Mary Garrigan, of New York City, Tim Garrigan and his wife, Melinda, of Catawissa, Jane Burns and her husband, Dave, of Coal Township, and Terry Garrigan, of New York City; four grandchildren, Megan Polvinale, Laura Polvinale, Kyle Garrigan Burns and Kara Walsh; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill, Ed, Joe and Paul; and two sisters, Margaret and Mary.
GARRIGAN — John L. Garrigan, 95, of 309 S. Market St., Shamokin. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at Mother Cabrini Church, 214 N. Shamokin St. at Webster Street, Shamokin. A committal service with military honors will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg. A visitation will be held in the vestibule of the church from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. prior to Mass. The James Kelley Funeral Home, 1001 W. Arch St. at Maple Street, Coal Township, has been entrusted with his arrangements.
