Chief Warrant Officer 5 Walter M. Fox

From December 1971 to March, 1996, Chief Warrant Officer Five (CW5) Walter M. Fox distinguished himself in a career of dedicated service to the Army and the nation. In 1971, then WO1 Fox began his career as an OH-58 scout helicopter pilot serving consecutive overseas tours in Korea and Germany. After returning to the United States, CW5 Fox received the CH-47A/B transition and served as Company Aviation Safety Officer for the 179th Aviation Company posted at Fort Carson, Colorado. However, it was long before the recently promoted CW3 Fox volunteered in 1980 to return to Germany to serve with the 180th Aviation Company stationed in Schwabisch Hall and then with the 228th Aviation Regiment at Fort Kobbe, Panama.
Following the Instructor Pilot Course, he was assigned to C Company, 7th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment from 1988 until 1991. Though stationed at Fort Campbell, once again found himself deployed overseas, this time to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Shortly after returning from the desert, CW5 Fox joined the 160th serving as the Standardization Instructor Pilot for A Company, 2nd Battalion, from 1993 through 1996. His technical and tactical competence was essential to the success of numerous worldwide deployments, to include Operation Uphold Democracy.
His successes and achievements as an MH-47 Flight Lead while assigned to A/2/160 are unparalleled and his expertise and reputation resulted in the ground and maritime special operations forces we support specifically requesting CW5 Fox by name. CW5 Fox's service to his nation tragically ended with his untimely death during an MH-47E Chinook, #465, flight on 7 March, 1996, near Russellville, Kentucky.
He was married to Nancy Fox and had two children, Tom and Amber.
