Eugene Adams, 84, passed away on Oct. 13, 2011, at the Medcenter One Mandan Living Center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Zion United Methodist Church, Tappen, with the Rev. Elmo Herman officiating. Burial will be in Fisher Cemetery, Tappen.

There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place.

Eugene John Adams was born July 8, 1927, to Olmstead Adams and Ida (Mason) Adams. He attended Manning Township Rural School No. 8 and Steele High School, until joining the U.S. Navy Seabees, serving in Guam for one year. He then returned to the family farm until 1953. Eugene married Elda Koon on June 20, 1950.

In 1953, they moved to Dickinson, where Gene began working for Consolidated Freightways as a truck driver. In 1954, they moved to Bismarck, where Gene started to drive for Dan Dugan and Transport, Inc. From 1955 to 1970, he worked for Standard Oil Refinery of Mandan. In 1970, Gene and Elda owned and operated Adams’ Grocery in Tappen, until they retired in 1995.

He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Tappen, and also was a lay leader, Sunday school teacher and youth leader for many years. Gene and Elda were inducted into the Dakotas United Methodist Youth Workers Hall of Fame in 1994. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a longtime fire chief for the fire department in Tappen. Also, he was active in Lions, Gideons International and on the Tappen city council.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and later in life, embroidery work. He was very proud of all of his family.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Elda (Koon) Adams, Steele; four sons, Kenneth Adams (Darlene Stanford-Adams), Valley City, Loren Adams, Dickinson, Bruce (Cathy) Adams, Lead, S.D., and James (Rebecca) Adams, Beach; his sisters, Jo Ellen Aichele, Steele, and Grace Hanson, Fosston, Minn.; his brothers, Wade Adams, Truth or Consequences, N.M., and Tom Adams, Dickinson; seven grandchildren, Calli, Amy, Evan, Noah, Jadyn, Isabelle and Rae Anna; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Laura Mae and Ruby Pitzen; and two brothers, Lee Adams and Harris Adams.
