Clifford was born in Martel, Ohio in 1892 to David Crock and Mary Elizabeth Laughery (Lizzie). His mother, Lizzie, died in 1897 when he was 5 years old. He and his older brother, Harmon, were raised by David's second wife Kate Martin. He has 5 half siblings.

He married Amina McClenathan in 1914. They had one child, Elizabeth C. Reed. He loved taking his family on fishing trips to Canada.

He worked as a carpenter. He worked at the Summit Beach Amusement Park in Akron, Ohio until he refused to do hasty carpentry. He constructed homes until 1932 when they moved to Palmyra, Ohio where he did farming and odd carpentry jobs until his death in 1942.
