He was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Rockwood, Tenn., and graduated as class valedictorian from Glen Rogers High School in Glen Rogers, W.Va. From 1940 to 1945, he served as a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corp. as an airplane maintenance technician with the 47th Fighter Squadron in the 335th Army Air Forces Base Unit in the Central Pacific and Hawaii. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor when the attack occurred. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Service Ribbon. Simpson was employed as a custodian with Avon Lake schools and later worked as a custodian for Hydro-Clear in Avon Lake before retiring. He was a member of the American Legion Post 211 in Avon Lake and the Am Vets. He was an avid reader. He is survived by his wife Alice (nee Kronk); sons William of Avon Lake and Richard of Cleveland; daughters Sandra Kuhn of Diamond Bar, Calif., Alicia Petrella of Cleveland, Adele Brown of Brookings, Ore., Rachelle Newlin and Bonnie Simpson, both of Avon Lake; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother, McKinley Simpson of Cleveland; and sisters Wilma Spangler, Margie Hortor and Dreama Starr, all of South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan (nee Christner); brother, Bill; sisters Mattie Wilson and Juanita Herron; and his parents, McKinley and Maggie (nee Moore) Simpson. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon-Belden Road, Avon Lake, where the American Legion Post 211, Avon Lake, will conduct services at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be at the funeral home Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon, where the Air Force and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9871, North Ridgeville, will conduct military honors. Memorials may be forwarded to Hospice of the Cleveland Clinic, 6801 Brecksville Road, Independence, OH 44131.
