Vaughn, the husband of Kathleen G. Dexter, the son of Shirley M.D. Earl of New Castle Pennsylvania, and the son of Lee L. Dexter who predeceased him; enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 6, 1966 in Pittsburg. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company M, 3d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of July the Battalion continued with it's defense of the Da Nang Airfield, the Marble Mountain Air Facility and the approaches in Quang Nam Province.

On July 2, during a search of the Phong Ho village complex 5 kilometers north of Dien Ban the Marines engaged the Viet Cong on several occasions, during one of the fire fights LCpl Dexter was killed in the action by hostile rifle fire.
