Stroke Takes Mary A. Ladd
Social Leader 56 Years in Portland

Mrs. Mary Andrews Ladd, 81, widow of the Portland banker, William M. Ladd, died Tuesday at 6 A. M. at her home, 01659 S. W. Greenwood drive. Death was due to a paralytic stroke.
Mrs. Ladd, Portland resident for the last 56 years, was a leader in social, religious and cultural life in the community. She was born in Cape Girardeau, Mo., but, as a child, moved with her parents to Oakland, Cal., where she later taught music.
Her marriage took place February 24, 1885, in Oakland. Mrs. Ladd was active in the First Presbyterian church, was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Colonial Dames.
Mrs. Ladd was a graduate of the old Portland high school and studied music in Oakland. For the last several years she has lived in Portland in the summer and California in the winter.
Surviving are two sons, Dr. William S. Ladd, New York City, and Thornton Ladd of Vancouver; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral arrangements, being made by J. P. Finley & Son, will be completed when Dr. Ladd arrives from New York.
Mrs. Ladd also was interested in support of the Portland Art Museum, and a permanent memorial to her is the Mary Andrews Ladd collection of Japanese prints, on exhibit there. She also has contributed a collection of etchings, of which she was an authority, to the Minneapolis art museum.
