Army Spc. Garza was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York, as an infantryman. Garza was killed when his platoon came in contact with enemy forces using rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire during combat operations in Nangalam. He was deployed to Afghanistan in early 2006 with 5,800 other members of the 10th Mountain Division to serve in Coalition Joint Task Force – 76, the U.S.-led multi-national military force in Afghanistan. Roger was a 1998 graduate of Robstown High School where he was an energetic practical joker, but took his responsibilities seriously. When his father died, Roger stepped up to take care of his sisters. He decided to join the Army in April 2004 to help care for his wife Rene and three young children. The family's fondest memories of Roger were his love of poetry, drawing pictures and playing video games. Everyone also laughed at his high energy – like he was on a sugar high all the time. They thought he would grow out of it but he never did. His awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
