He served in World War II in European Theater with the Ninth Infantry Division until he was severely injured at Elbe River in April 1945. He came back to Alabama and married Mary Ella Williams, in 1949. They raised two sons and lived in Bowdon, Georgia for 64 years. He worked in both the clothing and poultry industry for more than 40 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Ray Beam, Cranston Beam, Fannie Parrish, and Lois Creel.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Bowdon Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Bowdon City Cemetery. Prior to the services, he will lie-in-state at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the funeral hour. The family will receive friends at the Rainwater Funeral Home on Friday, August 9, 2012 from 2:00 till 4:00 p.m. and again from 5:00 till 8:00 p.m.
