AKA Thomas James Lesley.

The Anniston (Ala.) Star, Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1931:
T.J. STATHAM DIED SUDDENLY AT HOME HERE.
Passes Away at Table After Eating Supper Monday Night.

After finishing a light meal early Monday night. T.J. Statham, age 68, died suddenly while seated at the table at his home at 621 West Fourteenth Street.

Mr. Statham had not complained of any illness prior to his death. He slumped in his chair and was dead in an instant. Apoplexy was believed to have been the cause of death.

Funeral services were held from McCoy Methodist Church at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The pastor, Rev. O.A. Bonner, was assisted by Rev. L.N. Claxton, of the First Baptist Church, in the services. Burial took place at Edgemont Cemetery with Usrey in charge.

Surviving Mr. Statham are the widow, a daughter, Mrs. M.A. Morton, of Anniston, and a son, J.C. Statham, of Birmingham.

***

Thomas married Isabel Davis, daughter of Littleton Early Davis and Elizabeth King, on May 30, 1884 in Carroll County, Georgia. Their children were Izora Bell Statham, married Melvin A. Morton; Bertha Statham; and James Colbert Statham, married Lillie Cline Wells.

***

Thomas was the son of Thompson Lesley and Flora Statham, according to the 1899 estate documents of Flora's nephew, G.W. Green. The couple married sometime between 1850 and 1860, most likely in Mississippi where Flora's family was living.

Flora Statham is presumed to have died by 1860, when 2-year-old Thomas (as J. Lesley) and a 4-year-old sister identified as S. Lesley were living with Flora's mother in Hinds County, Mississippi. In 1870, Thomas (as James Lesley) was working as a farm laborer for the Henry Johnson family in Clayton County, Georgia, where Flora's mother was also living. By the 1880 census Thomas was carrying the Statham surname and is generally found thereafter as Thomas or Thomas J. Statham.

Thomas's father may have been the Thompson Lesley who enlisted with Co. G, 18th Mississippi Infantry at Corinth, Miss. in June 1861, age 31, born in Pickens District, South Carolina. He was discharged in early 1862 due to "dyspepsia producing extreme debility and emaciation" and presumably he did not survive for long after his discharge.
