Daughter of J. Valentine and Susan Gasque Dozier, wife of Maston J. Thomas.

FLORENCE - Mrs. Julia Thomas, 72, one of the early residents of Florence and a woman greatly beloved by all who knew her, died at her home on South Coit Street yesterday morning. Though she had been in failing health for the past several years, the end came suddenly. Members of the family assembled at her bedside as she breathed her last. They were grief-stricken witnesses of the peaceful close of a life spent in the service of others.

Funeral services for Mrs. Thomas will be held at Central Methodist church at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon and will be conducted by the Rev. J. H. Danner, pastor, assisted by Dr. George T. Harmon of Hartsville, a former pastor of the deceased. The body will be laid to rest in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Before marriage Mrs. Thomas was Miss Julia Dozier of Marion county. She was a daughter of James Valentine Dozier and Susanne C. Gasque, both of whom were members of Marion county families, prominent for many generations.

A native of Marion county, Mrs. Thomas had been a resident of Florence for over two score years. She was a woman of the finest character and of the most lovable disposition. Her life's work was passed in the care of her children and the service of her Lord. Many were the deeds of charity she performed that none ever knew. In the evening of her life she seemed content to continue doing good, sure of the reward that awaited her when the end, which she never feared, should come. And it came in the early dawn of yesterday when in perfect peace her beautiful soul returned to Him who gave it.

Surviving Mrs. Thomas are the following children: George W. Thomas, Mrs. J. L. Gunn, and Harry E. Thomas of Florence, and LaVerne Thomas of St. Petersburg, Fla. Mrs. Edna Wemple, a daughter, died some years ago. Eighteen grandchildren also survive.

Half sisters surviving are: Mrs. Ellen Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla., Mrs. Ida McKeithan of Winston-Salem, NC. One half-brother, Ben Altman of Marion county also survive.

Through all of her long suffering Mrs. Thomas never complained. She thought always of those closest to her and her chief concern was their welfare. Hers was the embodiment of a truly unselfish and Christian spirit.

Friends of Mrs. Thomas, those who had known her through the long years as well as others who were fortunate enough to come in close contact with her in later years were deeply grieved when they learned yesterday that she had passed away.

Note:
Julia's youngest son, Harry Everett Thomas, Sr. was born in 1898 and according to his death death certificate, was the son of J. Clifton Braswell. I've been unable to determine if Clifton and Julia were married. The 1900 census shows her as Julia Thomas, widow.
