Winnifred Alma (Winnie) Smoot was the youngest of two children (Everett Jr.) born to Everett Henry Jones, Sr. and, Cordella Jackson Jones on December 11, 1919. Her Dad later married Ruth Hazel Moore - Jones and seven children were born to this union, Theresa, Gerry, Lauranetta, Robert, William, Richard and Nancy. Winnie was educated in the Detroit Public School System and graduated from Cass Technical High School. On Chiristmas Day in 1941, she was joined in marriage to the late George Kaiser Smoot. They were married for 68 years. Winnie was one of the first African American women to be hired in the early 1940's by the J.L. Hudson Company. Winnie and George lived in Cleveland, Ohio for many years. Soon after moving back to Detroit, MI., she became a member of People's Community Church. She was gifted with a sense of humor; it was well known she loved her family and seldom missed any Jones or Smoot family special occasions.
Winnifred "Winnie", departed this life Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 12:45p.m. at Providence Hosiptal. She leaves to cherish her memory two brothers and three sisters; a very special friend Lorene Hampton; a childhood friend and classmate, Julia Esaw; a step-son George Lavern Smoot, and a host of nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends.
