Lois was born February 26, 1910, the last and youngest of 5 children. Her father, Frank McCauley, was a ‘stationary engineer’ and first custodian for the newly built Peabody School in Memphis – opened 1910/11. Her mother, Clara Highams McCauley was a home maker, lunch room worker, and sometimes private piano teacher. Lois and family lived on the grounds of the school until around 1925.

Lois eloped with James Dorset White in 1927 and had their only child, June Lee White, in 1932. Jimmy was a cashier for Farrell-Calhoun Paint & Glass Company until 1935 where some ‘dubious’ check handling on his part resulted in his departure. He later worked as a route man for a laundry. In 1944/45 they moved into a house at 2037 Southern Ave. They divorced in 1947. She did not remarry.

Lois worked as a secretary/ stenographer and receptionist. She had a creative side and would write and attempt publish a few short stories and articles, sewed, made children’s stuffed animals for sale, and played piano. Somewhere along the line she acquired the nickname of “George” for her honesty - or so I was told - and would occasionally be referred to in this manner by family.

She lived in the house on Southern until 1978 with the exception of 1964-66. In 1978 she moved in with her daughter June, son-in-law, and grandson as her health began to decline. Lois passed away in 1988.
