BROWNE, JAMES A.
James A. Browne, of Brownsville, is one of the citizens of large interest and substantial abilities who has made southeastern Texas so prosperous and progressive. He is not only an extensive stockman but is president of the First National Bank of that place, has been identified with its municipal affairs, and is one of the personal factors in the community whose influence is always strong and beneficial. Mr. Browne is a native of Brownsville, born November 30, 1853, a son of James G., a native of Ireland, who came to the United States in 1848 and located in that place.
The son received his early education in the private schools of Brownsville, his high studies being continued at Notre Dame College at South Bend, Indiana. With the completion of his school days, he returned to his native place and soon after was elected tax collector of Cameron County, holding that position ten years, and then resigned it to assist his father in the stock raising business which he had established. His experience in this line proved so profitable that he has continued in the stock raising business until the present time and has reached a position where he maintains 2,000 head of cattle annually, besides owning large tracts of land which he leases to farmers and stockmen. In October, 1908, he was also elected president of the First National Bank of Brownsville, whose affairs he ably superintends; also serves as director and president of the Planters' Ginning Company, and is director of the Ohio & Texas Sugar Company. In politics he is an active Democrat; is alderman of Brownsville, and as a public-spirited citizen has taken a prominent part in the local affairs of the city. He is also an active Elk and member of the Brownsville Lodge, No. 1032, B. P. O. E. Married in 1881 to Miss Agnes A. Powers, a daughter of Judge Stephen Powers, of Brownsville, he is the father of four children: Stephen P., Irene, James A., Jr., and Mary C. Historical Review of South-East Texas and the Founders, Leaders and Representative Men, Vol 2, by Dermot Hardy and Maj. Ingham S. Robert, by The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, 1910
