Blahnik, Leon P.

Leon P. Blahnik, age 95, longtime resident of Two Rivers, formerly of Kewaunee, died peacefully Sunday, October 11, 2015 with his two daughters present, at Meadow View Assisted Living of Two Rivers.

Leon was born in Kewaunee on Sept. 2, 1920, to the late Frank and Katherine (Shimanek) Blahnik. He graduated from Kewaunee High School with the class of 1938, and entered the U.S. Navy in August of 1942. He served his country during World War II, working mainly as an airline mechanic and was honorably discharged in January of 1946. On February 16, 1946, he married Mary Ellen Charlton in Kewaunee. She preceded him in death on January 30, 1996. Leon worked as a foreman for several years at the Svoboda Furniture Mfg. Co. of Kewaunee, and later became employed with Hamilton Industries in Two Rivers where he spent the next 34 years, retiring as foreman of the wood plant in 1985. Leon loved music; he played the clarinet and several other instruments; he sang in the Kewaunee church choir, and later with several of the church choirs in Two Rivers; he also enjoyed woodworking. Leon was very proud of his heritage and spoke the Czech language very fluently and became quiet involved in the family heritage. He was also a member of American Legion Post #165 of Two Rivers.

Survivors include his two daughters & sons-in-law, Catherine and Bill Downes of Castle Rock, Colorado, Rebecca and Clay Ringstad of Golden, Colorado; four grandchildren: Jill (Jerry) Pate, Dawn Downes-Bunney, Ryan (Ashley) Downes, and Marena Ringstad; six great grandchildren: Cameron Bunney, Safiya & Josie Castro, Bailey Pate, Griffin & Bode Downes; and one great great grandchild, Serienty Bunney. Several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Art (Viola) Blahnik, Betty Blahnik, and Birdie Kulhanek.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2015 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, 3201 Mishicot Rd. Two Rivers. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. Maurice Mmegbuadimma, with burial to follow in Knollwood Memorial Park, Hwy. 310, Manitowoc. Military rites will be accorded at the church immediately following the mass by members of the VFW Post #1248 and the American Legion Post #165 of Two Rivers.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, from 12 o'clock until 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 16, 2015. There will be no Thursday evening visitation.
