Richard and Priscilla married on October 19, 1853 in Burlington. Richard was a Conductor for the Vermont Central Railroad Company (VCRC). Richard and Engineman Adin French died when a boiler in the Railroad's locomotive "John Smith" exploded.
Burlington Free Press (Burlington, Vermont) July 28, 1855: "He was much esteemed by them [the VCRC) for his energy and uprightness of characters and to him was confided one of the most responsible posts on the road. By his associates he was beloved for his uniform kindness towards them, and they will feel in his loss, how great a thing it is to lose a friend.
Seldom has the community had occasion to deplore the loss of one of its most promising young men under more trying circumstances, and scarce ever has a happy family circle, in shorter time, been called from the scene of happiness, to sustain so great a weight of affliction. "
