Thomas Cave Sr. was born in Virginia in 1773. I am unsure of his parents' names at this point. He then moved to Spartanburg County, SC, where he and his first wife, Elizabeth Medford, were living in 1800 and 1810. Thomas served in Alston's 3rd Regiment of the SC Militia during the War of 1812. The family then moved to the Louisville area of Kentucky after the War of 1812. Sometime after 1816, the Caves moved to Knox County, Indiana. Here, his first wife, Elizabeth Medford, died sometime around 1824. Thomas Caves Sr. and his first wife had the following children: Reuben S. Cave, John Cave, Rosanna Cave Friend, Sarah Jane (Sallie) Cave Kearby, Elizabeth Cave Parsons, Holly Cave Edmonthon, and Mary Cave Stevens (Stephens). He married Lucinda Darnall in 1825, and they had two children: Nancy Cave Nelson and James Cave. Sometime around 1829, Lucinda Cave, Thomas' second wife, died. He then remarried Frances (Fanny) Davis, and had a final son, Thomas Caves Jr., with her in 1831. Nancy, James, and Thomas Jr., were all raised together.

Thomas Caves Sr. died in 1851, and left his estate without a will. The records are available from the Dubois County Courthouse, listed under Thomas Cave's Estate, filed November 27, 1851.
