Thomas Caves Jr. was the only son of the third marriage of Thomas Caves Sr. and Frances (Fanny) Davis Cave. It was a second marriage for Fanny Caves. He was raised with the children of his father's second marriage, James and Nancy Caves, children of Thomas Sr.'s marriage to Lucinda Darnall. They grew up on his farm in Dubois County, and Thomas Jr. married Rebecca Hoggatt on 22 Feb 1849, in Dubois Co., Indiana, USA. About a year later, their first child, Julia Ann Caves, was born, in March 1850. A second child, Rosanah Caves, was born in 1851, shortly before the death of their father. Little is known of their mother, except it appears she remarried to Thomas Jefferson Waggoner on 18 May 1853, in Dubois County, Indiana. The children stayed with Fanny Caves, who also lost her husband around the same time she lost her son. She continued to raise the children of Thomas Cave Jr. on the family farm until her death in 1858.

Thomas Cave Jr.'s burial site is unknown, but suspected to be on the family farm in Dubois County, Indiana.
